Free use of public transport

For children, people with disabilities and those serving the community

Children under the age of six as well as children who are residents of South Tyrol and aged six or over but do not yet attend school travel for free and do not need a ticket; they must however be accompanied by an adult when using public transport.

All residents of South Tyrol with a disability of 74% or more, with a different category of disability that is equivalent to a 100% degree of disability as outlined in the Provincial Government's Resolution No. 3755 of 9 October 2000, who are deaf or who have a long-term physical impairment that has an adverse effect on their ability to validate their ticket by themselves are entitled to use public transport free of charge. Südtirol Pass free tickets can be applied for by contacting the competent office (Ufficio Trasporto persone/Landesamt für Personenverkehr).

People who are blind or visually impaired are entitled to use public transport free of charge and without a ticket upon presenting an appropriate ID.

School-age pupils and students participating in cultural exchange programmes or humanitarian initiatives with schools or other institutions in South Tyrol can use public transport free of charge during their stay. Authorisations are issued by the competent office (Ufficio Trasporto persone/Landesamt für Personenverkehr).

Anyone serving the community by performing non-military (civilian) and social services pursuant to Legge Provinciale/Landesgesetz no. 19 of 19/11/2012 and anyone enrolled in a national civilian service programme (Servizio Civile Universale) pursuant to Legge 64/2001 is entitled to use public transport free of charge for the duration of their service and upon presenting an appropriate ID.

Young people taking part in a voluntary social year (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr) or the European Voluntary Service in South Tyrol can use public transport free of charge for the duration of their service.

Members of law enforcement, even if in plain clothes, may use public transport free of charge in order to perform their duties and provided that they have notified the staff in charge at the start of their journey.

Members of the armed forces wearing their uniform may use public transport free of charge in order to perform their duties.

Members of law enforcement and the armed forces can use any means of transport of the südtirolmobil network whose fares fall under the authority of the government of South Tyrol without a ticket. That includes regional trains (R) between Brennero/Brenner and Trento as well as between Malles/Mals and San Candido/Innichen or Versciaco/Vierschach, any urban buses as well as regional and Citybus services, the Renon/Ritten cable-car and light railway and the Mendola/Mendel funicular. Please note that this does not apply to long-distance or high-speed rail services (EC, IC, Italo, Freccia etc.) and on cable-car journeys to Colle/Kohlern, Meltina/Mölten, Verano/Vöran and Maranza/Meransen, which are part of the südtirolmobil fare system.

Please note that the above regulations do not apply to journeys on Nightliner bus services.
