Merano/Meran-Tel/Töll: rail tracks closed for two weeks

Drainage works required along the railway line

22 February 2021

Part of the lower section of the Venosta/Vinschgau valley railway line is expected to remain closed for two weeks as a precautionary measure. The decision comes after a water leak was discovered affecting the tracks. Replacement buses will be provided between Merano/Meran and Tel/Töll.

During their daily inspection of the Venosta/Vinschgau valley railway line, in the early morning of 22 February, STA staff detected significant water spillage and waterlogging beneath the tracks. The wet soil is probably caused by this year’s unusually large amounts of snow melting a result of the recent mild temperatures. Following an urgent on-site survey and analysis together with the mayor of Marlengo/Marling and a geologist, Marco Stabile – the director of the Venosta/Vinschgau valley railway line – ordered the immediate closure of the section in question.

The decision was made both as a precautionary measure and to allow the immediate drainage and stabilisation of the slope. As agreed with the municipality, the owners of the land above the railway tracks and the Province’s department of road services, everything is now being prepared to get the works under way in the next few days.

It is estimated that the section between Merano/Meran and Tel/Töll will remain closed for two weeks. Replacement buses will be provided between the two stations, with services departing at the same time the trains would from Merano/Meran train station and Tel/Töll train station. Please note that the replacement bus services will not call at Marlengo/Marling and Lagundo/Algund.
